Local farms could become illegal - NaturalNews.tv
The Senate is scheduled to vote this afternoon at 2pm ET on S 510 which is a food safety bill. It may seem like a good idea considering the many recalls for spinach, eggs, peanut butter and so many more. However, the bill as written would give the government control over food we grow in our own gardens and even make it illegal to save seeds. It puts food production under Homeland Security and would overburden small local organic farmers with government regulations and gives the Gov't far reaching authority. The bill also sells out our U.S. Sovereignty by ceding to the authority of both the World Trade Organization (WTO) and Codex Alimentarius. As this video states, it is clear to judge S 510 by the large organizations who are for it and the natural/organic farmers and small farm organizations who oppose it. It is urgent that we protect our right to organic, local food without government intervention.

Family Vacation To The Keys
We are back from our annual family vacation to the Florida Keys. This is our third year and we love it more each time. There is a definite time change when you reach the Keys... it seems like everyone takes a deep breath and we get to slow down from our daily busy schedules and deadlines. I love enjoying the simple pleasures with my family like: playing in the sand, snorkeling off the beach looking for fish & crabs, and watching the kids follow the tiny lizards that are everywhere. This was our second year going back to the Keys since my husband and I have been certified to scuba dive. It is also an amazing view in the deep places under the water. We saw some amazing creatures! However, we also heard from the resort manager that there are concerns by all the locals that what we know and love in the Keys could be threatened if the BP Oil Spill makes it's way down to Florida and into the mangroves. The mangroves are what protects the Key Islands and without that protection, we could lose a very unique and special place. However, we are thinking positive and already talking about our trip to the Keys next year and all the wonderful things we miss already and can't wait to experience again!
Pesticides linked to ADHD
A recent study shows a link between exposure of children to pesticides-- a certain kind called organophosphate pesticides, which account for as much as 70 percent of the pesticide use in the U.S-- and ADHD.
The researchers discovered that as exposure to this pesticide, which is on most conventionally grown fruit and vegetables, increased, the rate of children identified with ADHD increased as well.
An article from the Today Show, tells us that 4.5 million children are diagnosed with ADHD in the United States and many of them (2.5 million actually) are being medicated with drugs.
The research showed "Kids with higher-than-average levels of one pesticide marker were nearly twice as likely to be diagnosed with ADHD as children who showed no traces of the poison." That is amazing!
The article and research also recommends eating organic as much as possible. We all know that organic costs more but what is the cost to our children if we don't eat safe organic food?
The bottom line is...
- buy and eat organic produce as much as possible
- wash produce throughly
- tell your friends & family to help ban this pesticide

Local Farmers Markets Signal Summer
You know summer is here when the first local Farmers Markets begin! I was excited Saturday morning to head out with cash and bags in hand to visit my favorite farmers. I allowed myself an hour before meeting my family for weekend sports games. Normally that was plenty of time but this was no ordinary Noblesville Farmers Market! To my surprise there were 97 vendors... the largest in the market's history. I talked to Ron Wilson, who was at the Riverview booth talking about the Cancer Service Hamilton County, LLC's 3rd Annual Walk For Hope on Saturday, October 16th, 2010. Ron started this local event and hopes to grow it to equal the recent Relay For Life event. Ron also told me how the market had started on the Noblesville town square many years ago when farmers would pull up and sell produce out of the back of their trucks and now it has grown into so much more. I was excited to see one of my favorite local farmers, Amy Spencer from Homestead Growers and took home some of their tasty organically grown shiitake mushrooms. Other favorites included Uptown Cafe & Catering offering local coffee and "from scratch" treats and lots of flowers and herbs for those with green thumbs. Many new vendors joined the market including Epicureans, a local catering company owned by Nancy Nearon. Nancy offered tasty strawberry shortcake samples and will have cheesecakes and other offerings to take home each week.
Here are some of the local farmers markets to visit this summer and the best part is that while we keep our families healthy, we can support local farmers and business, visit old friends and make new ones! I hope you will visit some of my friends at the Noblesville Market next Saturday and maybe I will see you there!

Organic and Vintage Wear... Local and Independent
A couple weeks ago I had the opportunity to work next to Chris Karney, the Owner of "Organic and Vintage Wear" at Earth Day Indiana. I enjoyed learning about the company from Chris and his sister Megan (she helps at festivals and events) and was very excited to go home with several very cool shirts! I love the softness of the cloths but I bet you will be as surprised as I was to learn what they are made from! I love supporting local Independent business and since Chris is from Michigan (my home state)... that wrapped up a great package!
